LIBYA :   RECONSTRUCTION 18.500 HOMES DEVESTATED BY STOM DANIEL IN 2023

The Sahara Group UK and the Hawas Foundation forms a joint venture to rebuild Derna, after it was devastated by Storm Daniel. The storm Daniel was formed on 04.09.2023 and reached Libya on 10.09.2023, when 414 mm of rain fall caused floods and mudslides that bursted two dams. It turns out to be the second deadliest dam failure in history, after that of Banqiao in China in 1975.

Thirty million cubic metres of water indeed submerged entire villages, destroying completely 891 buildings of Derna, partially 211 buildings and covering 398 other buildings in mud. A United Nations analysis showed that an additional 2,200 buildings of Derna were flooded. 

Storm Daniel has  killed 4.333 people, injured 7.000 and displaced 46,000 others. It also exposes 300.000 vulnerable children, not only to post-flood diseases, but also, to violence and exploitation.
